In the 1800s, it was quite the fashion for your women to attend dances and balls in hopes of meeting their heart's desire. And dancing was an accepted practice for just such meetings. But Victorians being quite proper and orderly employed dance cards to keep things organized. The women would carry their dance card along with a tiny pencil and jot down the names of the young men they would dance with throughout the evening. So of course, dance cards and pencils became fashion statements.

In this offering, we have found two beautiful, sterling silver examples of dance card pencils. Notice that each has a loop on the end that would have been attached by a cord to the dance card or perhaps to a bracelet so as not to lose it throughout the evening's festivities. Today, they could be worn as pendants or put on display in a special place that conjures that organized sensibility of young love.

Both still work. In fact, there's still a piece of led in the small one. Both are marked "Sterling" but neither is dated. Based on the design, we estimate both were produced in the late 1800s through to the 1920s.
