As far as Depression glass goes, Moderntone is one of the few that I can get down with. As I'm sure you know, Depression glass was marketed to the lady of the house, the homemaker, of middle to lower working-class households. Where elegant and brilliant cut glass was out of their reach, they could now get colored, decorated glass inexpensively or for next to nothing by trading in the coupons they'd receive from buying other necessities.
So most Depression glass patterns are ornate floral patterns and in colors like pink and yellow. I don't know if Moderntone was marketed specifically towards men or just to a customer that had simpler, more modern tastes, but its simple design and less floral colors (it was offered in cobalt blue, amethyst crystal and a range of pastel colors on milk glass called platonite) feel like it had a more masculine appeal. The concentric rings that step up from the center give the modern feeling plates a hint of art deco.
Hazel-Atlas first produced Moderntone in 1939, about halfway through the Depression. While most categorize Moderntone as Depression glass, other than having been made during the Depression, the characteristics it shares with the category end there. Depression glass was sold cheaply because it could then be made cheaply. Very often pieces will have very visible and tactile mold lines or visible imperfections such as bubbles in the glass.as pieces were not being made by hand, I don't see any of those characteristics in these Moderntone plates.
These Hazel-Atlas Moderntone Cobalt Plates measure 8-1/2" in diameter. A small size for a dinner plate but very few sets have large 10" dinner plates. As I mentioned, Depression glass was sold to lower to middle-income households so these pieces were not collected to be displayed in a china cabinet, never used. Depression glass is often found well-use with scratches, or even wear to the glass itself. All of the dinner plates in this listing have some degree of wear with condition varying from 'very good' to ;'great' used condition. With each plate having varying degrees of scratches, none significant, but all with some, I can't pre-screen or vet the plates you will receive. You are just going to have to trust me. (Side note: with the right tools and abrasives as well as free time, the scratches can be buffed out, if you are so inclined.)
