Minimalist mid-century modern desk or conference table
Executive Office Group (EOG)
Model 9899 desk with model 601 file drawer
Design: George Nelson
Production: Herman Miller
USA, c. 1950s
Tawny walnut, black enameled steel, anodized aluminum
Marvelously minimalist mid-century desk by design titan George Nelson. At 7ft long, it offers an abundance of space for sprawling projects and collaboration. The distinctive perforated aluminum file drawer indicates that this piece was used as a large desk, but the model appears in the 1957 Herman Miller catalog in a section titled Small Conference and Work Tables, and it would serve well in those capacities too, or even as a dining table. (With the file drawer removed, of course.)
The Executive Office Group (EOG) revolutionized office furnishings when it debuted in the late 1940s, and though it was discontinued some 45 years ago, its influence continues to reverberate today due, no doubt, to the simple elegance and high quality of its designs.
DIMENSIONS
84" wide, 36" deep, 29.5" high
(Height is slightly variable due to leveling feet.)
CONDITION
Excellent vintage condition. Structurally sound. Letter size file drawer operates correctly. Desktop is either exceptionally well preserved or it's been refinished at some point. The top shows only very slight marks and impressions from use, and the finish shows slight all-over checking, which presents as slightly raised grain visible in raking light. For an example of the checking, see the starred photo, and look closely at the areas of glare.
On one of the long sides of the top near the corner is a round wood inlay, about the size of a pencil eraser, with red and green stripes. Our best guess is that it plugs a hole left by some accessory once installed there -- a coat hook or electrical outlet, for example. We think it's charming, but if you don't, please let us know, and we'll drill it out and replace it with a plug that matches the rest of the wood.
