Royal Bayreuth began making their wares in 1794, a time when the United States was not even 20 years old yet, in Tettau, Germany in Germany's Bavarian region. Many pieces will be inscribed or marked with the letter T indicating that it was made in the Tettau factory. The age of RB pieces can be estimated by the backstamp, with both the type of mark and the color of that mark being factors.
This piece was made sometime after 1902 and probably before 1930.
The decoration on this one eludes me, but I haven't given up and am still exploring other informational avenues. What I find most intriguing is how different the decoration on this piece is from other scenic pieces. Where most Royal Bayreuth scenic decors depict a person, usually a woman, in an Art Nouveau style in an idyllic woodland or provincial scene, this looks more like a mid-century modern oil painting, somewhat abstract with the focus more on the environment than an individual. When I look at the image, I feel like I'm looking through a crystal ball, spying on this fisherman bringing his catch in from a long day. Or he's a gondolier struggling to get back to Venice's safer and calmer canals.
Honestly, I love many of Royal Beyreuth's figurals but their scenic pieces have never been my vibe. This one though fascinates me and feels so different than the others. I've only found 2-3 other pieces that might be in the same line as this one, and even now I'm not 100% sure that they are. I'm eager to know more so if you know please do share, and I will share with you a discount on this (or any other) piece.
Royal Bayreuth Green Scenic Fisherman Vase measures 5-3/4" across and 9-1/2" tall. It is in EXCELLENT antique used shape, especially given it is well over 100 years old.
