19th century Napoleon III French extra large chinoiserie papier mâché tray

During the late 19th century period, papier-mâché or “boiled paper” pieces grew in popularity. They were most often combined with the classic prevailing Napoleonic ebony and chinoiserie finishes. 

This incredible, large scale “poche vide” or tray has a classic Napoleon III ebony finish, and chinoiserie gilt details—including cherry blossom florals and birds. 

The finish shows signs of soft wear, telling its story through its patina. 

A gorgeous piece that would make the perfect tray for a coffee table, dining table centrepiece or side table display.
