Fostoria produced Seascape from 1954 to 1958 and was the first of two opalescent glass lines. Seascape came in Caribee Blue and Coral Sand opalescent colors and were freeform, modern shapes that were the emerging trend in the atomic era of home decor. Soon to follow would be their Heirloom line, which was made in the same opalescent colors but the shapes were the polar opposite of what you find in Seascape. Pieces are ribbed with sharp, rigid lines. The ribs would come to sharp points giving the piece the look of a spiney flower or spikey shell.
Fostoria's superior craftsmanship and artisanry is clearly evident in these pieces. Where Victorian era opalescent pieces look haphazard and, for lack of a better word, handcrafted, Fostoria Seascape looks like the opalescence of the glass is natural as if it was found in nature like that. When I have sold people Seascale or Heirloom pieces in person in the past, if it was their first time encountering pieces from these lines, the reaction has generally been amazement and wonder, despite having seen opalescent glass before, Their work is clearly in a category unto themselves.
Fostoria Seascape Blue Opalescent Divided Relish Dish measures 9" X 6-1/2" X 1". It is in GREAT vintage used shape with no damage that needs calling out. I suspect this will be better suited as a candy or nut dish than a relish dish. Needing a side dish to hold relish, let alone two different relishes that need separation, doesn't feel as common at the dinner table today as it might have been in the 1950s, Please don't let a lack of relish consumption be your barrier to bringing this home.
