Toshi Yoshida's Materia is a stunning mid-century colour woodblock print. Hand-signed, dated, and numbered 8/30 by the artist in 1962.
Thisimpressive piece offers an exploration of the metaphysical and its relationship with matter. Through Toshi's use of abstract forms, bold colours and strong lines, flat planes of colour, geometrical shapes and unconventional compositions, it challenges traditional aesthetic conventions while still retaining a high level of beauty and character. It delves into the underlying structure and principles that govern reality to ask questions about what is ultimately real – examining both metaphysics (abstract concepts) as well as matter (physical properties). This work invites the viewer to discover deeper truths in our world by observing how these two seemingly disparate realms can be connected.

Toshi Yoshida was an artist of great breadth and vision. Though known primarily for his woodblock* prints, he was also a remarkable painter and illustrator. His artistic style cannot be easily summarised, because he was constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of the woodblock medium. His work ranges from realistic landscapes to imaginative abstract designs to detailed portraits of animals in their environments.
Toshi Yoshida was born into a family of renowned artists in 1911 and died in 1995. His father Hiroshi Yoshida, Yoshida Hiroshi (one of the most acclaimed artists of the Japanese 20th-century printmaking revival movement shin-hanga )trained him in this woodblock printmaking method.
After his father passed away, Toshi began his very personal exploration of abstraction, joining the Sosaku-hanga movement.
“Sosaku Hanga” is an artistic movement of Japanese woodblock printmaking process where the artist creates, carves and prints the entire work.
During this richly creative period (1954 to 1973), Toshi created over three hundred nonobjective designs.
Toshi's creative vision continues to inspire countless artists. His work is exhibited and collected all over the world.
