Barbones or bearded old men masks were made in Guerrero, Mexico and used for rain dances and Carnival dating back to the Victorian era. We believe this example to be pre 1920 based on similar examples in museums and that have come to market. This example features a chin rest and cloth covering on the interior which indicates it was made for use as well as decoration. This example has great detail in the hammered design and paint work, it also uniquely features a cigarette in his mouth.
