Ringware was Bauer's second dinnerware line, following their Plainware line, and the line that put Bauer on the California Pottery map. The lines were never named "Ringware" and "Plainware" by Bauer. Initially, they had no name, and then were referred to as California Pottery. Like many things that became collectibles, the names were assigned by the collecting community, who were probably less collectors at the time and more devoted fanbase. Ringware specifically refers to Bauer's second line, it isn't a category of dinnerware. To call other lines Ringware because the pattern has rings and it is solid-colored dinnerware would be incorrect, and if it's a seller, well, to me that's a warning sign to proceed with caution. Bauer was copied by several potteries and sellers can be very quick to attribute any solid color plate in a primary color to Bauer.
The plates in this listing are the 9" Ringware dinner plate, the smaller of two sizes of dinner plates. Honestly, I've never understood two sizes of dinner plates. (Sometimes the smaller size is called a luncheon plate.) Perhaps in the early 20th century the quantity of food consumed for lunch versus dinner was drastically different but even so, with the worst recession in US history taking place, I'm good with one size of dinner plate. So be cautious purchasing online if a seller does not provide dimensions because "dinner plate" in the Ringware line could be 9" or 11".
Ringware was made over the years with 8 different glaze colors. Other colors can be found on rare occasions, but those were likely experimental pieces or limited runs that were not available on all Ringware shapes. Light brown is probably the most common limited-run color found. Burgundy, Ivory and Black are the rarest of the standard colors. It is believed that white was a color only available by special order as it does not appear in any product catalogs. Burgundy and Black were later line additions that did not gain much popularity at the time. As a result, supply of these three colors is low with black and white being more in demand than burgundy and fetch higher prices.
Bauer Ringware 9" Dinner Plate measures 9-1/8" in diameter. These are in VERY GOOD vintage used condition with some pushing into GREAT. They all show signs of use with wear spots showing in the glaze. Bauer Ringware is a hearty plate and none show any indication of damage so the wear is more of an aesthetic concern.
This listing is for ONE plate in a color of your choice. You are welcome to purchase multiple colors, and to do so you will need to return to this listing after adding one color to your shopping cart in order to add the next.
