Delightful and earthy Faïence de Bordeaux blue floral plate. Hallmarked "David Johnston” at the bottom. Rare and highly collectable with great age, authenticity and historical value.

Switzerland and settling in Bordeaux France. A merchant born to one of the oldest families in Scotland which had settled in Ireland in the 17th C. His dream of making English style pottery and all his many hardships. A very interesting and quite sad story...although now centuries later he is an
iconic figure in Bordeaux's brief history of fine earthenware (1825 - 1895).

Jules Vieillard succeeds David Johnston in 1845

Measures; 9” width.

Authentic and stamped at the bottom which correlates to
the stamp shown in the Wikipedia link. The brand takes over
the coat of arms of the 3 croissants of the city of Bordeaux.

Good condition with surface marks from use. 3" hairline crack
at the back. Expect imperfections, this is a very old piece.
