A large and bold, beautifully designed 13" wall plate, depicting a woman among flowers holding a bird in each hand. I believe she may be Scheherazade (1001 Nights), a character from the Magic Flute themes or one of the other series Winnblad designed for Rosenthal. Truly superb quality materials and workmanship, with a stunning design that would compliment many decors including classic mid century modern and retro styles.
Bjørn Wiinblad, artist and designer, was known for his distinctive graphical and whimsical style. Opening his own workshop in 1952, Wiinblad established himself a worldwide reputation as multi-talented artist in the areas of painting, ceramics, fabric design and book and poster illustration. He began working for Rosenthal in 1957, and became one of the company's most important designers during his time there. His works are held in numerous collections including major international museums.
This piece is in pristine vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, measures 13" in diameter and stands 1.25" tall from the tabletop to the rim of the plate, weighs a hefty 2 lbs 12 oz. The back bears the green Rosenthal backstamp and a manufacturers applied "hanger".
