History
  • The mid-20th century saw the rise of the American Studio Craft movement, which was characterized by a focus on handcrafted furniture and artistic expression, emerging as a reaction against industrial mass production.
  • Furniture from the 1950s period often reflects the fusion of modernist principles with organic forms, highlighting a growing appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship and natural materials during that era.
  • Makers associated with the Studio Craft movement, such as George Nakashima, influenced modern furniture design by promoting the idea of furniture as functional art, paving the way for innovative designs that prioritize individuality and creativity.
