History
  • Brutalism emerged as an architectural and artistic movement in the mid-20th century, characterized by its raw materials and bold forms, often seen in public architecture and urban settings.
  • The 1970s were significant for brutalism, particularly in Belgium, where artists embraced the aesthetic in various art forms, including sculpture and wall hangings.
  • Understanding the context of brutalism helps appreciate the artistic philosophy that values function and material honesty, contributing to its resurgence in contemporary design discussions.
