Developed in northern and eastern France, Terre de Fer was an incredibly dense and durable variety of refined earthenware that mixed ironstone clay with feldspar and kaolin. With this innovation, French potteries created white, smooth, chip-resistant dishware and pitchers that replicated the quality of fine porcelain but withstood daily, heavy use. Produced by the renowned poterie, Creil et Montereau, during the pivotal 1884-1895 period in which the firm operated specialized ateliers de peinture (painting studios) where classically trained artists lent their talents to transform decorative objects into individual works of art, this beautiful jug incorporates two French motifs that exploded during the era.
