Exquisite OAK Hand Embroidered Chinese Export Silk Coat With Arctic Fox Collar. Circa 1920's / M
Exceptionally rare hand-embroidered Chinese export silk coat with arctic fox collar, featuring a garden of pavilions, pagodas, and bridges climbs across this 1920s cream silk coat, worked entirely by hand in polychrome silk floss. Court ladies stroll arched bridges and tend flowering urns. Cranes and exotic birds wheel across the shoulders, and at the hem, dragons chase pearls through swirling turquoise clouds. The palette is soft and sophisticated: coral, tangerine, lavender, sky blue, and dove gray on a creamy ground. Every figure has a tiny embroidered face, and the satin stitch is fine, dense, and sculptural, with a sheen that moves in the light. This is the work of skilled export workshops of the 1920s, when embroidered coats like this one were prized by fashionable women in the West.
