The rich brown and the mottled green/yellow “drip” effect result from the natural ash glaze (hai-kaburi), typical of much TAMBA ware. The finish is produced at high temperatures in multi-chamber climbing kilns (noborigama), as wood ash settles and reacts with the iron in the clay to create organic, irreplicable patterns. The rustic, earthy tones and the wabi-sabi aesthetic (appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”) are highly valued in Japanese culture, and often appear in pieces used for Ikebana.

Tamba ware has a long-standing history in Japan, believed to have originated in the Heian period, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and regional techniques that date back centuries.

The use of natural ash glazes and multi-chamber kilns reflects centuries of development in ceramic techniques, particularly in the production of earthenware throughout Japan's rich pottery traditions.

The appreciation for the wabi-sabi aesthetic in Japanese culture promotes an understanding of beauty that cherishes natural imperfections and the transient nature of all things, which has deep historical roots in Zen philosophy.
