ATTIC DC + Awesome Foundation
Retail Grant

In collaboration with the DC Chapter of the Awesome Foundation, we're sponsoring a $1,000 grant to support an idea that will stimulate and/or highlight the DC retail community. Stores/businesses, individuals and associations are eligible to apply.

one good idea   one thousand dollars

ATTIC received an Awesome Foundation grant in 2015. ATTIC has since grown to more than a dozen cities making the products of more than 1,000 small, independent businesses easier to find. We're sponsoring this grant to help pay it forward.

2020 Winner: DC Shop Small

The inaugural grant went to DC Shop Small, an initiative started by shop owner and local resident Mallory Shelter. The project was started as a way for local DC residents to discover businesses that were operating online due to the COVID19 pandemic. The effort featured a "Small Business Saturday" event on April 25, 2020. The project is proposing to continue and launch a "Shop Small + Give Back" where every week for the month of June 2020, 10-15 local businesses will give 10% of their sales on a select day to a local non-profit.

2020 Application Information (Washington DC)

ATTIC and the Awesome DC Foundation are pleased to announce a new special grant intended to support the establishment, growth or visibility of small, local retailers or artisans in the Washington, DC area. The grant will provide up to $1,000 to support the execution of an idea -- such as a project, event or product that supports small, local retail businesses in the community.

Examples of ideas include:

  • A project to dress-up the streetscape in a retail district;
  • A community-focused event at a retail location (e.g., a fundraiser based at a local store);
  • Projects intended to amplify or provide exposure to small, local retailers or artisans;
  • Your creative, outside-the-box, awesome idea :)

We are making the grant available immediately in light of the COVID pandemic and the strain it's placing on DC's independent retail businesses. Proposals can be for either immediate/near-term implementation or for after COVID stay-at-home restrictions are lifted.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. A winner could be awarded as early as May 24, 2020. Only one grant is available at this time.
